The Algarve, Undressed: Clifftop Gold, a Secret Sea Cave & Moonlight on My Skin
October just might be the Algarve's best-kept secret. The summer crowds have packed up their sun loungers, the Atlantic is still bath-warm at 21°C, and the light — oh, the light — turns every honey-gold cliff and turquoise cove into something that looks less like a coastline and more like a slow, deliberate seduction. This is the Portugal the postcards don't show you: empty staircases carved into ochre rock, caves that glow from the inside out, and sunsets that hold on a little longer just for you.
I flew into Faro, drove west past the orange groves, and spent four days doing absolutely nothing productive — swimming, climbing, floating, and letting the salt dry on my skin. Here's what it looked like.
📍 Scene 1 — Clifftop Gold at Ponta da Piedade
The cliffs at Ponta da Piedade drop straight into the sea like they're daring you to look down. I wore a white linen sundress and a cream sarong knotted at my hips, barefoot on the warm stone, hair whipping sideways in the breeze. From up here you can see all the way down into the hidden coves — ochre pillars, natural arches, and water so turquoise it looks edited. It isn't.
📍 Scene 2 — Inside Benagil's Glowing Cave
You've seen the photo. You have not felt it. Benagil's sea cave is only reachable by water — swim in, paddle in, or take a kayak through the low arch — and once you're inside, the famous oculus opens overhead and drops a single shaft of golden light straight onto the sand. I floated there in an ivory bikini, saltwater streaming off my shoulders, laughing at nothing at all. Late afternoon is the moment: the light turns amber, the water glows teal, and the whole cave feels like a secret you're not supposed to tell.

📍 Scene 3 — Moonlight at Praia da Marinha
After dark, the Algarve empties out completely. I walked the edge of Praia da Marinha barefoot, a sheer black cover-up slipping off one shoulder, the limestone cliffs glowing pale under a full moon while the Atlantic rippled a silver path straight toward me. No music, no crowd — just the sound of the tide and the feeling that the whole coastline belonged to me for those twenty minutes.

✨ Algarve Travel Tips
- Come in October. Sea temperature stays around 21°C, prices drop by a third, and the cliffs are blissfully empty. This is the shoulder-season sweet spot.
- Book the Benagil cave early. Boat tours from Portimão and Benagil beach fill up fast; kayak and SUP rentals get you in closer and let you linger. Bring a dry bag — you will get wet.
- Rent a car. The best beaches (Praia da Marinha, Praia da Falésia, Ponta da Piedade) aren't walkable from each other, and the coastal roads are half the fun.
- Chase the light. Ponta da Piedade at midday for turquoise drama, Benagil late afternoon for the oculus beam, Praia da Marinha at golden hour and again after dark for the moonlit cliffs.
- Eat late and local. Grilled sardines, cataplana de marisco, and a glass of chilled Vinho Verde at a cliffside tasca — then stay for the sunset you didn't plan on.
💋 The Algarve doesn't shout. It waits until everyone's gone, drops the temperature by ten degrees, and then shows you what it's really been hiding. Next Thursday I'm trading cliffs for a coastline that bites back harder — somewhere with black sand and a very different kind of heat. Keep up. 😘
